According to the Iranian state television, the death sentence imposed on Efkari was executed in Shiraz Adilabad Prison, where he was detained in the morning.
Efkari, who was arrested in September 2018 for the deliberate murder of a security guard in the city of Shiraz during protests against economic problems in the country in August 2018, was sentenced to death by the court where he was tried last month. Efkari’s brothers, Vahid, was sentenced to 54 years in prison and Habib for 24 years for being linked to the murder.
Images in which Efkari confessed to stabbing and murdering Hasan Turkman, who worked as a security guard at the state waterworks during the protests, were broadcast on state television last week, but those who opposed Efkari’s execution claimed that the confessions were taken under torture.
Nevid Efkari won national championships in wrestling, which is considered one of the most popular sports in Iran. After the Iranian athlete was sentenced to death, the international sports community and human rights organizations called on Iran to stop the execution.
After the calls increased, US President Donald Trump sent a message to the Tehran administration on Twitter last week to prevent Efkari from being executed.
In his message Trump, “We hear that Iran will execute the magnificent and famous wrestling star Nevid Efkari, 27 years old. Efkari’s only action is to participate in the anti-government protests in the streets. I address Iranian leaders, I would be very happy if you donate this young man’s life and do not execute him. ” had included his statement.
