Astonishment and concern gripped the ranks of the Florida Gators on Saturday night when their leader Keyontae Johnson collapsed on the floor
After a time out, Johnson fell like a mass, forward. He received immediate treatment and was then evacuated to the locker room, before being transported to the hospital. Before the action, as reported, the 21-year-old had just signed an alley-oop, celebrated with his teammates. As the match was about to resume, he fell violently on the pitch.
“Critical but stable condition”
“Keynote Johnson remains in critical but stable condition at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital,” his team confirmed on Sunday in a statement. He is surrounded by his parents but also his coach Mike White and the head of the team’s medical staff.
The medical verdict and the reasons for this sudden loss of consciousness are not known. No link has yet been established, but the 21-year-old had been infected with the coronavirus during the summer. Covid-19 can, in some cases, cause heart damage with increased risks of myocarditis. After the assumption of responsibility of Keyontae Johnson, the match had come to an end, to end with a defeat of the Gators (83-71).
