Facebook builds a smartwatch based on Android to replace Apple Watch
Will Apple’s Apple Watch have a new competitor soon? This is what the American media announces, referring to sources inside Facebook. According to him, the company is currently working on a connected watch project, which is already well advanced. The product is said to be on the market as early as next year.
According to The Information, Facebook’s connected watch will compete with Apple Watch in the health field, with multiple sensors designed to track user patterns, both daily and during exercise. But the device would also be intended to highlight messaging services owned by Facebook (like Messenger or WhatsApp).
Like many competitors, Facebook’s smartwatch is expected to run on a version of Android, Google’s operating system, without knowing whether the company is working on its own software overlay.
Facebook’s marketing of a smartwatch could be one way to continue its foray into the hardware ecosystem, having released Portal, a smart video conferencing screen, in 2018.
With a product intended to collect our health data, Facebook will still have to convince its potential customers to trust it. Unlike Apple, whose revenue does not come from advertising, Facebook might indeed be tempted to use this valuable information to better target its users.
