Australia passes law to make Google, Facebook pay for news

Australia has passed a world-first law aimed at making Google and Facebook pay for news content on their platforms

A new development in the Facebook-Australia crisis that has been going on for weeks has attracted the attention of the world once again. The crisis that Australia started living with Facebook and Google came to an end after Australia announced in April 2020 that it would arrange for tech companies to pay for their news sources for the content they use.

Australia passed a new law that would force Facebook to pay publishers for news content and set the stage for similar actions in other countries. The new law, passed by the Australian Parliament on Thursday, stated that “news media businesses will be paid fairly for the content they produce”.
